Biography of Betto Washo Priest (Betto washo gyojo)(Incomplete)
Ink on Paper / One Scroll of Five Sheets
- original
- transcription
Composed of five papers in one volume, the first and second papers detail the biography of Dengyo Daishi Saicho, the founder of the Tendai Order, and the third and subsequent papers contain a brief biography of Betto Daishi (administrative master) Kojo. The first paper is missing the beginning, and there are gaps between the second and third papers. It's explicitly stated that this biography was compiled on May 5, 874, by Enho and others from Enryaku-ji Temple's Joshin-in. At the end of the scroll, in another hand, it is noted that two copies of this brief biography were made; one was stamped and presented to the betto administrative office, and the other was retained at the temple house (Enryaku-ji Temple), with signatures from Enchin, the head of the temple, and Gyoshun, the monastic leader. Enryaku-ji's seal is stamped on the document.
