A document that sheds light on Buddhist interactions between Japan and China
These drafts are from the time when Enchin, about to return to Japan from Tang China, requested the Governor of Taizhou, Yan Xiumu 厳修睦, to provide a kugen certificate that would acknowledge his right to take the over 400 volumes of scriptures he had acquired in China back to Japan. All four documents are preserved, with Enchin himself making additions and corrections to the drafts in red or black ink. In the first document, he requests that the certificate be issued in accordance with the precedent set by the Dengyo Daishi Saicho, who received a similar certificate from the Governor of Taizhou, Lu Chun 陸淳. However, as the issuance was delayed, he mentions the imminent departure of his disciples in the second document, and in the third, he repeats his request, noting that Li Yanxiao (李延孝)’s ship to Japan was scheduled to sail in early April. The fourth document is a draft of a thank-you note submitted the day after his request was granted on April 8th. In June of 858, after nearly six years, Enchin concluded his mission to seek the Dharma in Tang China and departed Taizhou to return to Japan.
