Documents that shed light on Enchin's activities in Dazaifu

Enchin, who departed Kyoto in April of 851 to seek the Dharma in Tang China, arrived at Dazaifu in May and stayed at Shinou-in Temple on Mt. Shiroyama until July of 853, waiting for a ship to take him across the sea. This volume is a historical document that reveals Enchin's activities during his stay in Dazaifu. The first document is a congratulatory address submitted in October of 851 to Emperor Montoku (827–858), who had approved Enchin's journey to China, praising the Emperor's wisdom and wishing for his longevity, on the occasion of Montoku's enthronement and Daijosai ceremony. The second document reports to the Imperial Court that Enchin arranged for the expenses of having two novice monks reside in Shinou-in Temple on Mt. Shiroyama to chant the Lotus Sutra, the Diamond Sutra, and mantras for Emperor Montoku until Enchin's return from China. The third document is a letter addressed to a priest called Shu Wajo in which Enchin recounts chanting the Lotus Sutra and mantras for Emperor Montoku, Crown Prince Korehito (later Emperor Seiwa, 850–881), and the brothers Fujiwara no Yoshifusa and Yoshimi, his greatest patrons. According to the postscript, the original was presented to Emperor Kameyama during his visit to Shitenno-ji Temple in 1267, and copies were made at that time.
