Under the Ritsuryo system, the monastic ranks for monks were established in 760, with the Dharma Transmission Rank and the Practice Rank set under the rank of Daihoshi, each with four sub-ranks: Hoshi, Man'i, Jui, and Nyui. Later, in 864, three new ranks (Hoin Daikasho, Hogen Kasho, and Hokkyo Shonin) were added above the existing monastic ranks, corresponding to the official monastic positions (Sojo, Sozu, and Risshi) in the Office of Monastic Affairs (which oversaw all monks and nuns and managed all temples nationwide). This document is a copy of the position credential and imperial decree when Enchin was conferred the rank of Hogen Daikasho Monk in March of 883.
