A special rank credential that even the Chinese admired

Rank credentials were official documents issued when conferring a monastic rank, and this document is the credential awarded to Enchin on June 22, 849, for the rank of Dento Daihoshi. Originally, the Dento Daihoshi rank was granted by imperial command, and Enchin had already been formally awarded the official credential by imperial decree, but this document was specially applied for by Enchin in preparation for his journey to Tang China, written on beautiful light brown figured silk with a diamond pattern. This led to it being called the “Figured Silk Rank Credential.” It is also known as "Ministry of Central Affairs Rank Credential" because it was co-signed by officials of the Ministry, led by Prince Tokiyasu (later Emperor Koko). Its format follows the Enryaku-ji Temple Sozan-ichiki (12-year discipline in the mountain) Credential Style which would later be defined in the Engishiki, and is stamped with an official Naishi-no-in seal of the Office of Female Chamberlains.
