In 888, at the age of 75, Enchin wrote a code of conduct for his disciples. This document, as one of Enchin's later writings, displays a high level of sophistication through his elegantly simple and refined style. The text comprises three clauses: Firstly, to uphold the teachings of Dengyo Daishi and enhance faith in the Three Sanno Deities (Sanno Sansho) of Mt. Hiei. Secondly, to never forget the grace of Betto Daishi Kojo. Thirdly, to observe the teachings of Jikaku Daishi Ennin, unite in harmony to protect Enryaku-ji, and ensure the Tendai order flourishes. Enchin passed away three years later in 891, but this document reflects his strong sense of responsibility and commitment to the future of the Tendai sect, having succeeded both Dengyo and Jikaku Daishi and served as the head of the Tendai Order for 24 years.
