Chisho Daishi Seated Statue

Kamakura period

This is a statue of Chisho Daishi, the founder of Miidera, modeled after the statue of Chisho Daishi (Chuson Daishi Statue; a National Treasure) enshrined in the Toin, and was originally worshipped in the Kangakuin School.
It was carved in a single piece from a block of cypress, extending from the head to the knees and the edge of the hem. It is beautifully colored overall with raised arabesque patterns on the collar and sleeves of the monk’s robe, representing the characteristics of the Kamakura period (1185–1333).
The calm and gentle expression reflects the deep reverence people have for Chisho Daishi.
The bottom of the statue features a cone-shaped hollow, which is believed to have been used to place items associated with Chisho Daishi, following previous examples like the statue containing the remains of Daishi enshrined in the Toin, but both the items and the lid that sealed the bottom have been lost.
