Aizen Myoo Seated Statue

Heian period

The Aizen Myoo (Ragaraja) is a revered figure believed to have the power to convert human passions and desires into the aspiration for Buddhahood. This statue is usually not open to the public.
It is a secret statue enshrined in Miidera’s Kannondo Hall, the 14th temple of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, along with statues of Nyoirin Kannon (Chintamanicakra) and Bishamonten (Vaisravana).
It uses a yosegi-zukuri joint wood block construction technique, with engraved eyes and features six arms. It is depicted in a wrathful expression and has a lion head crown.
Typically, Aizen Myoo is expressed as fearsome, but with its fleshed-out sculpting and the garment around the knees, this statue exhibits an overall gentle style.
It is valuable as one of the older revered statues of Aizen Myoo.
