Kangetsu Butai Stage

Edo Period (3rd year of Kaei Era, 1849)

The Kangetsu (moon viewing) Butai Stage is an elegant structure with a cypress-bark roof in a hip-and-gable style, created with soft curves along the slopes of Mt. Nagara.
It has been known as a renowned spot for moon viewing since ancient times.
The stage is a kake-zukuri (overhanging) structure, supported by square pillars at each corner, with a plank floor open on all sides.
From the stage, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Biwa, including the Lake Biwa Canal and the cityscape of Otsu.
Famous as a picturesque location for viewing Lake Biwa and moon viewing since the Edo period (1603–1868), it was frequented by many literati and artists.
