Bell Tower

Edo Period (11th year of Bunka Era, 1814)

The Bell Tower is constructed with two stories, primarily following a Zen-style.
On the southern side is a central opening with a paneled wooden door featuring an interior staircase leading to a raised platform for ringing the bell.
The structure is built in a hip-and-gable style with a base that flares out like a castle keep. It is made entirely of zelkova wood.
The first floor is supported by corner pillars, with three-stepped bracket complexes carrying the high-railed cut-edge verandah.
The second floor features round pillars, with ornamental devices comprising minotsuka and frog-leg struts.
The bracket complexes also have three-stepped designs, and the absence of tail rafters reflects the traditional architecture of Shiga Prefecture from the Kamakura period (1185–1333) onward.
The overall design is well-balanced, demonstrating a sleek beauty.
